Celebrated on March 18th
Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water! Americans use more than 67 million tons of paper per year, or about 580 pounds per person. Paper products make up the largest part (approximately 40 percent) of our trash.
In 2009, Americans threw away a lot of glass! In fact, they threw away around 9 million tons of glass. To put this into perspective, this is enough glass to stretch tractor-trailers from LA to NYC and back again. Americans typically throw out around 25 million plastic bottles per year.
Without exception, recycling is the top action society can do to simultaneously improve: the environment, the economy, sustainable manufacturing and to prevent waste from going into oceans.
