Celebrated on March 14th
There are about 24,000 species of butterflies. The moths are even more numerous: about 140,000 species of them were counted all over the world. Butterflies range in size from a tiny 1/8 inch to a huge almost 12 inches.
One of the best ways that butterflies protect themselves is by using their wings. Besides using them to fly away from threats or things that are trying to harm them, butterflies have adapted to have wings that camouflage with their surroundings, or even have patterns on them that mimic other large animals, like owls.
Butterflies “taste” with their front feet! Most female butterflies lay their eggs on the kinds of plants their caterpillars will want to eat – this helps make sure the young are able to start eating right after they hatch. Otherwise, they will starve.
