Celebrated on August 22nd
The peach tree is often considered to be the tree of life. Georgia is the Peach State, although California produces about 50% of the USA peaches. The peach pit contains hydrocyanic acid which is a poisonous substance. Since it does not taste good, most people are unlikely to eat it.
Peaches, along with cherries, plums and apricots, are stone fruits. They are called “stone fruit” because of the hard pits surrounding their seeds. The peach is a member of the rose family and is a close relative of almonds. China is the world’s leading producer of peaches accounting for about half of world production.
Peaches and nectarines are the exact same fruit. The only difference is a peach has a fuzzy exterior and a nectarine’s skin is smooth.
