Celebrated on June 28th
The chuck wagon (a cowboy’s portable kitchen wagon used on the cattle trails) was invented by Charles Goodnight in 1866. He used an army surplus Studebaker wagon to create what is considered by many as the first food truck. Raul Martinez converted an old ice cream truck into the nation’s first taco truck in 1974 and parked it outside of an East Los Angeles bar. The last Friday of June is National Eat at a Food Truck Day.
As of 2014, Orlando was atop the list of having the highest food truck:resident ratio. There was one food truck for every 37.67 people. Burgers and tacos are two of the most popular entrees served on mobile food trucks in the United States. Food trucks have inspired other mobile businesses including clothing stores, hair salons and even mini-gyms.
You aren’t just going to show up on a street corner and suddenly serve thousands of customers. Sure, you might do business with a few curious people who walk past and take a chance, but there’s actually a fair amount of marketing that goes into running a successful food truck business.
